I love Sting, always have done and although this song isn’t my favourite it’s one of his best known. Sting, as a lyricist, is brilliant and it might be why I’ve followed his career for so long. 'Fields of Gold' is about life, memories and love. It’s heart-warming instrumental arrangement, Sting’s vocal and incredible lyrics have meant the song will remain a classic for years to come.

The story conjures up beautiful images of golden crops swaying gently in a summer breeze as the sun continues to ripen the life-giving harvest. My favourite line “You can tell the sun in his jealous sky” is simply brilliant. What a gorgeously sumptuous line. I’ve read many interpretations of it but to me, the sky is jealous of the sun and continually tries to hide it with clouds and the flow of day to night. Limiting its presence. An interesting metaphor don’t you agree?

I knew a girl I almost went out with. We hung out together a bit. I say almost because the time wasn’t quite right but I really liked her. A few years later, I met her again by pure chance, in a pub. In fact, she knee-dropped me and as I turned to bellow at the perpetrator, there she stood, grinning and looking absolutely stunning. She’d blossomed into an even more gorgeous young lady. We embarked on an illicit, steamy and very close relationship that was destined never to quite be. I’m often left wondering what might have been and why we never made something more of it. I knew I loved her and always have. I suppose I’ll never know.

I chose this line for the image because it creates the perfect, young lovers, romantic image. It’s almost every school-boys perfect dream. The beautiful girl, sun, fields and love/lust. I asked Tink to be nude for two reasons, the first being practical (you can see her obvious passion) and the second because it’s pure and real. Nudity prevents clothes getting in the way and hiding true meaning, cluttering the scene with unnecessary narrative. She’s naked because she wants to be and is comfortable with her lover. She wants him and knows he wants her, physically and emotionally. She’s free and alive, kissing the air, life itself. As my lover and I were all those years ago.
