Know Me
Artist: The The
Song: Giant
Album: Soul Mining
Model: Ezzie
Location: Chippenham, Wiltshire UK

Notes:-
I was turned onto 'The The' by their track 'Uncertain Smile' which featured a 5 minute piano solo by Jools Holland (that still makes the hair on my neck stand on end). My gorgeous friend at college, Christine got me into them and I still listen regularly.

The album reminds me of Christine, bright, sunny, chaotic and dangerous to know. She used to joke she could wind me round her little finger and to a certain extent she could. She opened my eyes to a different world, a fun but a risky one. I was in love with Christine but not in love with her in the way I came to know. I was infatuated with her energy, her craziness and her troubled past.

The song is one of those that would speak to many young adults of any generation including me. I knew I was entering the big wide world but not quite sure about how to tackle it. What my identity was. “I’m scared of god, I’m scared of hell and I’m caving in upon myself”. I can remember sitting listening to this track and not really understanding its relevance to me. It has a mesmerising drum beat, solid all the way through but this lyric is the one that always interested me. I didn’t really know who I wanted to be. I left college a pacifist with an anti-government stance. So, what did I do? I kinda fell into working for a bank (as you do)! I struggled with myself for years, convincing myself I could change the system from within etc etc. The reality was, I had no idea who I was or what I really wanted to do or become.

I remind myself sometimes about how I felt at the time when I’m puzzled by my own children and their seeming lack of lust for life.

The shot itself came about while Ezzie and I were shooting another lyric. I told her about this one and that I’d purchased the mask a few months earlier. It was her suggestion to use the mirror and it came together from there.
